Right where I was suppose to be.....

Kirby and I have been volunteering in the children's church a lot since September. Which means we haven't been 'in' church and able to listen to the sermon for a few months. It's kind of a fine line sometimes with feeling the call to volunteer and wanting to spend some time sitting in a pew....

But.....

Today, we were able to listen and we were put right where we needed to be at 11am on this Sunday.  The pastor spoke about authority and this passage below.  It hit me hard.....I've been struggling with this issue for a long, long time and today I got my answer

Thank you.

Jeremiah 12

Jeremiah Argues With the Lord
1 Lord, when I bring a matter to you,
you always do what is right.
But now I would like to speak with you
about whether you are being fair.
   Why are sinful people successful?
Why do those who can't be trusted have an easy life?
 2 You have planted them.
Their roots are deep in the ground.
      They grow and produce fruit.
They honor you by what they say.
But their hearts are far away from you.
3 Lord, you know me and see me.
You test my thoughts about you.
Drag those people off like sheep to be killed!
Set them apart for the day of their death!
4 How long will the land be thirsty for water?
How long will the grass in every field be dry?
The people who live in the land are evil.
So the animals and birds have died.
And that's not all. The people are saying,
"The Lord won't see what happens to us."
The Lord Replies to Jeremiah
5 The Lord says, "Suppose you have run in a race with other men.
And suppose they have worn you out.
Then how would you be able to race against horses?
Suppose you feel safe only in open country.
Then how would you get along in the bushes near the Jordan River?

Things are winding down......or are they?

Wow-middle of October already!  Here's a quick update on the Kirby Krew.

*My re-entry into the coaching world is coming to an end.  One more practice and one more game and the 8th grade season is done.  I was able to coach a talented group of girls this year and even those that weren't so talented, were very coach-able.   So, now that I've re-appeared on the coaching scene, the question of, "Will you coach JO's this winter for x, y, z..... ?"

*Kirby is wrapping up the football season. Last regular season game is tonight and playoffs start next week. Good thing too cause it's starting to get chilly outside!

*Hockey is just around the corner... we've been busy selling calendars and getting skates ready for practice on the 29th.

*Kirby's basketball season starts next week...yup, right from football to basketball. In fact, the day of his playoff game for football is the first day of basketball practice. Hmm, how is that going to work?   Logan is excited to dust off his basketball shoes though and even dear Emma is ready to help out this year.

*Emma is doing well in 2nd grade.  We don't hear too much about what's she's doing but she comes home with lots of papers that have big STARS on them so we'll take that as a good sign.

*Logan is loving preschool!  I think his favorite part is working on the ipads (yes, ipads. How cool is that?  Thank goodness for grant money!) and riding the bus to daycare.

*Raider still chews on Gunner's ears every chance he gets and Gunner recently spent the afternoon out walking the woods with Logan and Daddy.  Rumor has it Raider gets the green light next time.

*Looking forward to Halloween and the changing of the seasons.  Yes, I was in Menards yesterday looking at the Christmas decorations and trees and yes I bought some xmas lights.  You all know I love Christmas!

*Teaching Sunday school has been a challenge but we are helping where there is a need.  Kirby is apparently adored by all the female teachers, or so I hear.....and I'm dusting off my classroom skills of keeping 3-4-5 year olds entertained and learning something in the process.

*Whew...I'm tried just writing all that!  We hope you are all doing well and hope that our paths cross soon!

“If you Choose not to decide - you still have made a Choice.”

There’s a weird little irony in my family. My Dadd is a talented, self trained musician. The only instrument that I can play is the radio. My Dadd’s brother, Tim, was and still is an athlete. As a matter of fact, at one point, Tim was an assistant football coach for the Warroad Warriors way back when. We all love to hunt and fish until the sun won’t shine but the sports connection is actually only there between Tim and me. No sports connection with me and my old man, I assure you.

Another odd little family quirk pops up from time to time. It seems folks tend to think that Tim and I more closely resemble each other. I guess our shared athletic interests probably add to the actual physical resemblance that people pick up on. Actually, when someone chirps about us Kirby boys looking alike, we all get a nice chuckle.

Tom and Tim are brothers. No doubt. Same mother. Same Father. There’s a resemblance.
Tim’s son, Aaron, looks as if pictures of Tim have come back to life. They’re spitting images of each other, only one has aged like fine wine and moldy cheese.
Me and my Dadd...yeah, not so much. But there’s a reason.

So the story goes...
In 1974, a beautiful young Raggedy Ann met an older man at a Halloween party. 9 months later a son was born. Now, I was too young to know for myself but it seems that in the mid 70’s people married in spite of unplanned pregnancies. Although they weren’t in love, the did have a son together and so Raggedy Ann married the man 15+ years her senior. Born in Illinois, I understand that by my first birthday I could also boast temporary residency in both California and Virginia as well. Migrant workers we were not. As a matter of fact, I’ve been told that using the word “work” and “the older man” in the same sentence isn’t something that people routinely did. Seems this young family struggled to make ends meat and the primary breadwinner of the family was not interested in “winning any bread” nor was he real keen on maintaining a fledgling family. To make a long story short, the man of whose loins from which I come, walked away before I could walk. To this day, I would not know him if we brushed elbows in the grocery store and that doesn’t make me sad.

Honest.

You see...shortly after her first marriage disintegrated, Raggedy Ann (I don’t know exact details but by now I’m sure that she had lost the costume) met a musician that luckily was in her same age demographic. It wasn’t long and a new relationship blossomed between the two with wedding bells and another child on the horizon. Before either of those came though, the musician made a choice. He made a promise. The twenty something, long haired, guitar playing young man made a choice to love ME - the fatherless, carrot-topped terrible two year old.

A choice. Forever.

To solidify that commitment, my Dadd adopted me in a Minnesota court of law a couple of years closer to the 80’s, and it was then that I took his last name. Their marriage didn’t last. The musician’s choice did.
I’m pretty sure that my parents divorced in 1980. I know I was in kindergarten. They both remarried at some point. Dadd : once & Mom : ummm, more than once. (Different story folks.)

But therein is my obscenely quick explanation of the funny little chuckle we get when people that don’t know “can tell that we’re kin”. You can’t. We don’t look alike because there is no biological connection. How could you know? I never expected you to. But fear not, that has never defined a family in my life. Being family is a “choice.” I’m not sad nor mad. I have a family.

I’ve kept the “Kirby” name and am actually one of a few that use it as a moniker like “Prince” or “Elvis”. The rest of my Dadd’s family has never wavered either. Loving me was never a biological requirement of Grandma Fox. It was a choice. Feeding me was never a “right of relation” required of Grandma Judy. It was a choice. Showering me with love and attention was not required of any of those aunts and uncles because they felt obligated that the “same blood” flowed through our veins. Because, in fact, it didn’t. Loving me was a choice. None of them had to do it, bound by some chromosomal crossover. They did it because they wanted to. They choose, as Dadd did, to love me and I am so very grateful that they did.

And all along, Raggedy Ann did the best she could with the situation she was dealt. Mom raised my sister and I to be caring and compassionate; to have the inner drive to succeed despite adversity. Mom was never given the “easy road” in life and through that was able to somehow raise good kids to become good parents.
Lest I forget my step-mother, Rose. She has made the same choice that I have made in my own adult life. She married a spouse with two kids and me, a spouse with one. She has loved me even when loving me was hard. She has helped me become the man and father I am today. I’m so thankful she chose me.

Contrary to popular belief, becoming a step-parent was not a pre-requisite in my courting days. I met and fell in love with a beautiful woman at college. And that woman had a son. Oh the irony...(Cue the sappy music...) Michele protected herself and her son in the early stages of our relationship but once she decided that I was alright, I got to meet Tyler. I fell in love again. I wanted Michele in my life forever. And I made a choice, to love Tyler too. I wanted Tyler in my life - forever.

I still do.

I love you Michele. I love you Mom. I love you Dadd. I love you Rose. I love you Tyler.

Rest In Peace.

A few months ago I was able to travel to Bismarck to help celebrate my Grandmother's 100th birthday.
100 years old.....can you image that?
Imagine all the things you do and see in that lifespan.

Last week I traveled to Bismarck for her funeral.

Thanks for being such a great Grandma!
We love you and hope you are happy in heaven with Grandpa.
I know that I will miss your smile, angel food cake and cute giggle.

Logan's party weekend....

Sometimes it's hard being a little boy.
Well, not really...other than being short.

Logan celebrated his 5th birthday this past weekend.
Saturday started off with a trip down to my brother's house...
Emma and Logan with the yummy cake!

Logan getting a few gift cards.

Emma being Emma..

Then Sunday was Logan's other birthday party. We decided to take 10 kids bowling....

The daycare gang!

All these kids attend daycare together.
The tall kid is Isaiah our daycare providers son.
He loves all these kids as if they are his little brothers and sisters.
He drives our kids from daycare to football practice for us.
He plays with them when he gets home from school.
He is the first one to  hug them when he sees them at an athletic event or around town.
He was more than happy to spend his Sunday afternoon bowling with a bunch of 5-6-7 year olds.
He's a great kid and our kids love him!

Logan eating his fishing cupcake.

Happy Birthday Logan!

We love you!

Such good form! He must be related to a family of bowlers...

Then, on Monday, his REAL birthday....we took him to Applebee's for dinner.
The wait staff sang to him.
He got a free sundae.
Life is good.

Then it was off to Walmart.
Both Emma and Logan have been saving their money to buy a DS.
They have been earning marbles by doing good in school, doing chores, being nice to others, and being helpful around the house. Once they fill their jar, they get $ from us.

After many, many, many months of saving and earning...they finally saved enough to buy their own DS.
They were sooooo excited! And we are so proud of them for being patient and learning that earning and saving your money is a good skill to have.

Logan was so excited, that he fells asleep in the car ride home.

But, he had to wake up to open a few more gifts from Emma and us.
We bought him a paper jams...watch out Papa Tom-Logan is learning the guitar!

Happy Birthday Logan!
We love you!
You are wonderful little boy that warms the hearts of many.
Someday we'll buy you a boat...

Emma Rae-Star of the Week.....

Our dearest Emma is Star of the Week for her classroom and for this special week, the parents were asked to write a letter that was read outloud to her classmates.  Below is our letter........

From the moment I first laid eyes I her I knew I was in “Love”. Her delicate yet exquisite hair may have been what first drew me in. It was as if gold and silk had been magically combined to highlight the most beautiful and angelic face I had ever seen. Her long athletic body was a perfect compliment to her proper posture and powerful frame. She immediately commanded the attention of even the most weary eyes. She was then and is now easy to spot from across any room. Her presence was calming and people sought her company. I now know I am happier when I’m around her.

I could easily be describing falling in love with Emma’s mother, Michele but I’m not. I write about my beautiful daughter Emma and as sappy and lovey-dovey as it sounds, I absolutely think she is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I can pick out our little white-haired girl in a crowd in an instant. She stands out - not just because of her heavenly hair but because of the way she conducts herself. Miss Emma has made us so proud of the young lady that she has become.

She’s respectful and friendly. Emma’s cheerful and happy. She’s hard-working and talented. Sista Emma is persistent and energetic. She’s funny and focused. Minnow is brave and entertaining. Our daughter is all we’ve ever hoped she would be and more and we are so excited to see what great things she’ll be able to do in the years to come.

For a long time Emma has been saving for that special something on her wish list. Along the way, our daughter is learning patience and discipline as she regularly helps when things need to be done around the house. Her school work is spectacular and she’s so self driven that we know her goals are reachable and she’ll soon enjoy the rewards of all that hard work.

One of the reasons why Emma does so well is because of the friends she has made and the choices that they make with her. Emma has picked great friends and is lucky to have so many good kids around her. Friendship is such a powerful thing. When good kids make good decisions that makes teachers and parents proud. Thank you, boys and girls, for being such good friends to our daughter.

Growing older is so exciting. Watching our daughter grow and learn every day is so rewarding. She is even willing to step away from her comfort zone some times and Emma is open to trying new things.

A wonderful daughter. A great sister. A fabulous grand-daughter. We love you Emma. We are so proud of you and all that you do.
Love -

Mom and Dad

Emma was also chosen as the Phy Ed student of the week!  Bonus!  Good job Emma Roo!

Run-bike and pray.

Saturday morning we all got up and did a family 1 mile fun run in North Branch.
Our little Logan just about ran the whole thing but stopped to wait for his friend.
Logan is one tough little dude!
Emma was not so much into running so we enjoyed a nice walk with good conversation on a fall morning.

The dogs are out in full force loving the cooler temps.
Here's Gunner our loving older dog.....

And of course Raider who won't stand still long enough for me to get a picture of him.
I think he's chewing on a stick or a dead frog........

Then there's this little boy....
Whose birthday is next week.....
But found his new bike stashed in the back shed.
He and Emma were going to play volleyball and they both went in the back shed to find a ball......
And of course found his new bike.

I told Logan that we'd just have to take it back now that he found it a week early.
His response, "I can just forget I found it."
Too smart!

At this point we couldn't deny him riding his new bike...
He took off and rode for an hour straight.
He LOVES his new bike.

On a side note, please pray for our good friends little boy Max. He is Logan's buddy from preschool and we spend lots of time together.  In fact, I taught Sunday School yesterday to Logan and Max's age group and he had on his Vikings jersey all ready for the game!

He fell from a 2nd story window yesterday and is down at Children's.
So far just a broken arm and we are hoping that is all!
Take care Max!
