Rud was Wrong.

Maybe 2012 - I don't know, maybe it was 2013...doesn't really matter because we had the conversation more than once. Annually Brent would get caught listening to me contemplate my future in coaching the varsity football team. I typically went back and forth with a litany of excuses and maybe a few positive takeaways thrown in there to balance things out. The reality was that after a dozen years in the program, I was planning my exit strategy and running it by an outsider looking in.

Brent was never convinced. He even went as far to say that he thought I'd be Logan's Varsity football coach. Which at the time meant that I had 10 more years to look forward to - kind of calling me out and saying that although I was testing the waters of stepping away, he didn't think I could do it.

In 2015 that decision was made for me and a series of Blog Posts chronicled my year in Alaska.

Rud was Wrong. I am not the Varsity Football coach anymore and tonight - Logan will be driving the ship. Our son, will be taking 1st team snaps at Quarterback and leading his team against their rival, the Braham Bombers, in the Home Opener.

He's got 2 seasons of Varsity under his belt as an Underclassmen and although he was a major force on defense and a significant role player on offense - this year the Tigers will be looking for him to lead the way. It's hard to say if they'll be able to duplicate their recent success. This old coach thinks the road may be a little bumpier this season with a new offense installed and a turnover in coaches, along with the graduation of some great friends that were good football players. No matter, Logan is up to the challenge. He's going to do great.

Right now, Logan's living the All American Dream. He's got the perfect suntan from a summer spent working at the pool. The kids in swimming lessons adored him. I frequently fielded feedback for folks that loved watching Logan teach swim lessons. The All American Dream - got a truck to drive and a boat to haul behind it. Logan spent the summer catching fish in Mom's sparkly bass boat.
He talked his girlfriend into going a few times and got her little brother out often. Speaking of girlfriend - he's living the All American Dream - got a lovely little lady to share each day with. Cady and Logan have been friends since they were preschoolers and now they compliment each other perfectly -  Each bringing out the brighter side of things in one another.

Rud was Wrong... I'm no longer the Varsity Football coach - and tonight #16 starts his Junior year. We couldn't be prouder. He works hard. He's humble. He's a great teammate and friend. He's a happy kid and treats others kindly. Go get'em BEAR!

I detect a Pulse....

I know that there are plenty of things happening in our mundane, day to day lives that warrant a Blog Post. I often find myself thinking, "hey, that'd be a good story".
HOF announcements, Family reunions in Bemidji, Swim Lessons and Water Aerobics, random tearing off of the shed roof and Michele's cross-dressing friend in Vegas...all of which could easily turn into a 3 page essay with my wordy ways...
But the Blog sits dormant sometimes - all volcano references make me think of our friends in Hawaii...and there goes another missed opportunity for me to have written things down - Emma's trip to the Islands!

Speaking of Emma - I think she's the one that most often reminds me the value contained here within. She gobbles up novels regularly and when the feeling strikes, she fires up "the Kirby Krew" as a walk down Memory Lane. What started when the kids were so young as a way to connect with family and friends from afar has turned in to a digital history of the storylines that bind us together.

I'm grateful that Sista Emma is still clicking away.
I'm sure Brent, Dillon and Uncle Jeff click by periodically - more often than not they're greeted with the same old story that was here the last time they got the hankering to check in on the Krew. I apologize to everyone....it's a pattern I know all to well....Love the Blog and write like a fiend for a while and then neglect it like a nagging back injury until you can't take the pain anymore. I wonder who else visits undetected.

I am so proud of this collection of ramblings and musings. Michele would want you all to know that it was her idea a hundred years ago and that I initially balked at the Fufu idea....turns out, Michele was right. I guess she really is a Hall of Famer.

Wicked Wrister.

The drive in to school this morning was a little sketchy. Another round of incessant snow fell from the skies, making yet another school commute a white knuckler. It's March 1st. Hardy Minnesotans are outwardly begging for reprieve. We're ready for Spring. All the signs are there... the Warroad girls hockey team has been crowned State Champs; the sun rises earlier and sets even later; Michele has returned from her annual Mexican check in and check out and although the lakes are still covered in multiple feet of ice, it's time to renew our fishing licenses. All signs point to Spring... Muskie Expo, turkey talk, boys State tourney followed by baseball...it's all on the horizon...if only we could see it - through this Incessant SNOW!!

Two weeks ago the Pine City Dragons went down swinging in the second round of section playoffs against the heavily favored Monticello Moose. For three periods, Dragon Sophomore, Aaron Rootkie stood on his head turning away 38 shots on net. All the scoring took place in the second period. Freshman, McCall Leger, sniped our lone goal at the 3:48 minute mark on a dime from #10, Logan Kirby... the team played well - underclassmen carried a heavy load. When the final horn sounded, the scoreboard read 2-1. Thus bringing Logan's sophomore season of hockey to a close.

When football wrapped last Fall, we quickly changed gears and readied our family for the welcomed leap from youth to high school hockey. Ice Fees, balancing crazy schedules and weekend games would be traded in for coach buses, Varsity & JV squads, grade checks and booster clubs. To be honest, we didn't quite know where Logan would fit in. There's always been a bit of uncertainty surrounding tryouts and placements. Turns out, he was one of four kids to play in all 27 games this season. As a matter of fact, he was actually a top 4 defenseman on the Varsity from the drop.

Logan is calm with the puck on his stick and equally deft at passing to initiate the breakout. He is a smooth skating, stay at home defenseman. This season he quickly asserted himself as a top penalty killer and got plenty of practice while elders watched from the box. Guys in the association that I've looked up to over the years started to take notice and sought us out to sing Logan's praises. As a 10th grader, Logan was thrown right in to the mix and showed that he could handle the pace and intensity of big boy hockey. He's the kid that hands the puck to the linesman at every stoppage of play. Logan's the teammate that always checks in with his goalie whether things are going good or not so good. He does what the coaches ask of him and shows his appreciation for their time and efforts with a personable handshake at the end of every match.

The Pine City Civic Center was buzzing on that Friday night in December. Coming off a tough road loss to Cambridge-Isanti, the Dragons were looking to right the ship against their conference opponents, the Princeton Tigers. It was the first home game of the year and the crowd was treated to a back and forth affair. Early in the second period Logan showed up on the stat sheet, notching an assist on Blake Painovich's dirty goal that gave the good guys a 3-1 lead. Princeton punched back and scored the next three goals. The game pressed on. As tensions started to rise, 7 different Dragons marched to the Sin Bin. Thankfully the PK held strong but time was running out.

With just a shade over 5 minutes left in the game, Blake delivered a low to high pass catching Logan in stride as he moved left to right in the high slot. Logan bent over to receive the pass, loaded his stick, looked up and fired across the goaltender's body - hitting paydirt, high blocker side.

Tie Game. The crowd went nuts.

I anticipated the Tiger Woods fist pump or the giant group hug to follow but Logan's celly made this a moment I will never forget. Immediately following his first Varsity goal, #10 enthusiastically skated to the glass and emphatically pointed at his old man in the stands! Every ounce of energy and adrenaline shooting out of his body came directly at his mother and I watching proudly along the blueline. It was a made for TV moment that was totally unscripted but perfectly executed. It wasn't long before he was swarmed by his teammates and then ushered off to celebrate with the others waiting on the bench.

The last 5 minutes of regulation went back and forth although the momentum completely favored the Pine City skaters. Luckily, Logan's game tying heroics weren't for naught as two minutes into overtime, Senior Captain, Isaac Jahnz would score a bizarre game winner on what would ironically be his only goal of the year.

The home win pushed the Dragons' record to 3-1. The remainder of the season had plenty of highs and lows. There were some blowouts as well as a few nail biters. They good guys would end up losing their next two overtime games and never quite match the excitement of that early OT win versus Princeton. The boys finished slightly below .500 and were competitive in the conference. Next weekend is the State Tournament. We'll cheer for the underdogs and against the private schools. Next Monday we'll have our post season awards and buffet dinner....that is, if it ever stops snowing!

Merry Kiss Cam

It was far from our first date but it was a good one.

On Saturday Michele and I took in a UMD Bulldogs hockey game at Amsoil Arena. Before we left the AirBnB, we watched a little NCAA volleyball. Michele gave way and knew that we had to get going and that volleyball could wait. Together we navigated a bustling parking problem around Superior Street. Bentleyville, an ice fishing show and the Dogs game created a maze of holiday hype and congested cars. We parked out in the tooleys and walked and talked and held hands in the Skywalk. It was a perfect beginning to a lovely evening with my wife.

After checking in with our e-tickets, a stroll around the rink made for some good people watching before we finally took our seats in the 10th row. Because we were so early, we got to sit hand in hand again and take in the sights and sounds of the college hockey experience. Bright lights, a peppy Pep Band, beer drinkers and unique pre-game rituals. The game itself was competitive and exciting. It was immediately apparent that the speed of the college game was intensely faster than the high school games that we're used to.  The Denver Pioneers and UMD Bulldogs exchanged blows and took turns in and out of the penalty box. At the end of regulation, the score was tied.

We were hopeful that our presence was going to be the good luck charm that the Bulldogs needed to pull out a win against the nation's number one seeded team but such wasn't the case. A turnover in the defensive zone wound up in the back of the UMD net and Denver got the W.

But so did I.

Tomorrow marks 20 years that I've been married to Miss Michele Dinius. I've long said that I won the Wife Lottery and if that's the only lottery I ever win again, I'd be happy the rest of my days. Sure Michele and I dream about the Mega Millions but we have always dreamt together...dreamt of a happy home...dreamt of healthy kids...dreamt of loyal dogs and family trips...by all accounts - we are living the dream.

2.5 kids and a white picket fence.

There's a recent movie release on HULU called "Merry Kiss Cam". It's a Romantic Comedy set in Duluth around the holiday season. It is borderline corny but it's got hockey and romance and bourbon... all the things I like. The unsuspecting couple become the talk of the town when they appear on the Bulldog Kiss Cam while on their first date. The rabid fans are convinced that this couple are the reason that the UMD team wins and subsequently dig themselves out of the gutter...the more they show up and kiss...the more the team wins....

Michele and I never made it on the Kiss Cam last Saturday... the Bulldogs LOST.

Coincidence? Maybe - maybe not.

I wish the PR department at Amsoil knew that I was sitting in Section 116 Row 10 right next to the love of my life!

I love you FIVE - Happy Anniversary!

25 - in NYC?

Wipe the Slate clean.

it's mid-november now. snow has been gently falling for two days. i'm not sure it will "stick'.

logan started hockey yesterday and tonight we'll attend the awards night for another successful football season. tyler and brittny released the much anticipated wedding video and in totally unrelated news, tyler shot his fist buck last week. michele just returned from a refreshing trip to florida book-ended by a hurricane and a snow storm... and me? no more football....no more hockey... just been sitting in a deer stand watching for deer that aren't there and listening to the ringing in my ears.

i'm good.

really.

just tired of clicking on this here blog and seeing another therapeutic essay at the top of the list. two weeks shy of dave's passing and my head space is much clearer than it has been in the last year.

2021 was tough. in the span of 9 weeks, 3 of my closest buddies took their last breaths on their earthbound lives and in the ensuing months my head and my heart were on their own magical disappearing acts. at times i was lost. sometimes i was found. i rode a bike a long way. i walked and talked with michele and raider and that eased the pain. i drank and that didn't. i cried and prayed and then prayed and cried.

vehicle vs pedestrian car accident, cancer and suicide. funerals, eulogies and tears.

but i'm good.

my kids are healthy. one is homesick. one is heartbroken over lost quarry and one is learning about interest rates and mortgages... see now, even our problems are good problems to have.

2022 has been better than the end of 2021. i still think of my friends often. the pain has subsided, giving way to memories and laughter but man it was hard to get here.

miss you boys.

Statute of Limitations

Lucky for me, the world I grew up in didn't have video cameras in the hands of every adolescent. Lucky for me, I was raised by two loving but opposing sets of parent/step parents both equally inept at keeping pace with my bullshit. Lucky for me, I had some of the best running mates a guy could ask for. Guys to stand behind, in front of and along side of me - talking me in to the shit that I've atoned for well in to my adult life. Lucky for me, the statute of limitations has run out on most if not all the fuckery we found ourselves in.

And if I don't get my act together and write this stuff down - I'm worried there may be a statute of limitations on my grieving process too.

Ya see, I have buddies from the outskirts of a far northern border town. I, too, have buddies from both sides of the tracks in the Chicagoland suburbs. My upbringing was scattered across the redneck and B-boy spectrum and decorated with some minor successes as well as its fair share of childhood trauma. Bouncing between parenting households in the rural north and urban mid-west was just our norm. In 1984 my mom took us out of the Hood and into suburbia. It was there that I met John and Dave.

Looking back, it's hard to say which of the two had a larger head. I mean seriously, their craniums were the stuff of legends. John's melon was almost always decorated with a curly coif of hair and Dave sported this REM, mid-80's, rejected comb-over. Either way, these were my dudes. We tossed a ball, served detentions and rode children's bikes together daily. We had sleepovers; shared lockers and chased girls together. John and Dave are the key witnesses in my Trials of Life as I am to theirs.

I started this soliloquy with the promise of stories that could straddle to bounds of legalities. I no longer feel compelled to build stories centered on mild vandalism, insignificant thievery, missing persons reports and often overlooked and sometimes not so insignificant injuries. Suffice it so say, John, Dave and I amassed a childhood of memories that would make Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn jealous. For that I am forever grateful.

I missed Dave's practice wedding because I was serving a sandbox sentence overseas in Uncle Sam's Motorcycle Club. I was invited but couldn't attend - it "just wasn't in the cards." Dave wrote me a letter and sent pictures. Years later, John and Dave travelled to Minnesota for that mild December day when Michele and I exchanged nuptials. They donated money to the local Native American gambling facilities and giggled a the sight of the Pump 'n' Munch. But they were here. A couple years later, Dave and I dressed up in monkey suits when Jen finally convinced Shay to marry her. We were lucky to avoid an ass whopping or even jail time that weekend all centered on public intoxication and urination in no particular order. But we were there. When Dave gave marriage a second chance, John and I were there.

Into adulthood, our fascination with 20" bikes held. Big kid paychecks helped make some of those childhood dreams come true. John and Dave threw money back in to BMX. At the same time, I resurrected a teal colored ghost from the past. Just like that, a group of boys that grew up together were pounding pedals into the pavement and spinning circles on their little bicycles on the street corners again,

Our kids - Mitchell and Bella, Emma and Logan -  they have Uncles - not only by blood or marriage but also by association. We've become "family".  And although time, jobs, nuclear families, and travel have sometimes separated us all - our connection has infinitely been there. Kamp Kirby rebooted things and served to build memories for a second generation. Our families seamlessly melded and again we shared holidays, vacations and other pleasantries.

Everything was happening just like it was scripted...

...and then it wasn't...

In the middle of a snowy night on November 30th John called to tell me that Dave had done the unthinkable.

Suicide is what the death certificate states but we know that the actual cause of death was a broken heart.

The beer swilling, ninja star chucking, cussing, burping, farting, hilarious, caring, understanding, compassionate and considerate big headed bastard couldn't take it anymore...nothing we could say to him, nothing we could offer him, no comfort for the outlook ahead compared to the pain inside that Fat Head of his.

In June 2015 we danced at his wedding and on December 12, 2021 we cried at his funeral.

In the 9 months since, John and I talked weekly, if not daily at times. Emma and I traveled to Illinois for Spring Break and Mitchell and John made it up for graduation in June. There wasn't a Kamp this summer. Dave ruined that. We've all ran the gamut of emotions from disbelief, anxiety, and depression to anger, mistrust and doubt. I've held my kids closer and leaned heavily on my wife. John did the same in his home.

Since Dave's passing I found myself crying at the drop of a hat. A sad country song or a gangster rap song can have the same effect....I've prayed endlessly. Sometimes I've bellowed like a baby and other times just felt my breath taken away from me unexpectedly. I've laughed at the memories and questioned what we could have done more. We've had some real hard days and as time passes, things have gotten easier.

They say that suicide ends the pain for one by passing it on to everyone else. I can vouch for that.

Like some small little Miracle....some proof of a high Power...as these words poured out of my heart and into this keyboard....my daughter just text the family group chat.

"Can we go to Chicago for Thanksgiving?"

And now I'm crying again...in real time.

I guess there is no Statute of Limitations on Grief.

Be Careful what you're Good At....

I've been stuck in 4th grade since 2016. Can't seem to find my way back to 6th grade...truth is, I kinda like it here. I teach with a couple of younger gals that are a boatload of fun. They keep me in line; listen to my BS and even placate my ego from time to time. So it is that I'm teaching a Creative Writing class to the High Fliers of fourth grade. Brekka has a Masters in Reading Instuction and voluteered to work with those that struggle with all things Literacy. Krista took the "middle of the road" kids and is learning right along with them and because I write huntin' stories and peck out a Blog every once in a while, that qualified me to take the high kids to the next level.

Last week we worked on paiting a picture through artful word choice and the careful use of our 5 senses. At the time, none of us could even name all five senses, myself included....after a Google Search we listed them on the board and practiced writing about SIGHT - SOUND - SMELL - TASTE and TOUCH. We used a picture of a lush green countryside as our Demo.

Today, we upped our game and tried catchy, Introductory Paragraphs. Aiden defined for us "the Hook."

When I set them free to write - I modeled the same expectations and wrote right along side of them.

The following is what I came up with.

As the morning sun burnt off the last little bit of fog that clung to the hillside, I wondered if I would ever see her again. The woman that stole my heart grew up in these hills. It was here that we spent the afternoon giggling over a hastily packed picnic some three years earlier. And now she’s gone. But here I sit in the dew covered grass, listening to the acorns gently fall to the ground and wonder if she’s thinking about me….wherever she is. Does she remember our walks down the lonely gravel roads? Hand in hand – without a care in the world. Does she remember the time we spent chasing the croaking frogs in the cool waters of Strawberry Creek? Did our strolls through the ripened orchard mean as much to her as they meant to me? And now she’s gone.

As she left for her homeroom, Morgan exclaimed, "Mr. Kirby's writing a LOVE story!"

Who knew?

Editor's Note: I swear this is Romantic FICTION.
