Not so Lean Cuisine.

I have had a lot of interesting things cross my palate since coming to the 49th state. Spotted seal and Eskimo ice cream topped the list at the Buckland River Camp. Here in Kivalina I’ve been treated to Muktuk, Aiviq, and Tuttu – whale, walrus and caribou.
Just this morning I had a piece of Pilot Bread and some Fireweed Jelly that was made from the purple leaves of the fireweed plants on the Buckland flats. Tonight we quickly threw together a Bear Creek soup but made it Alaskan by dropping in some small bits of steak from the Moose that Ben Mettling shot last Fall.
Aqpiq (salmonberries) in my pancakes. Caribou soup with flatbread for dunking.

I am eating well in Alaska.

But Nothing – and I mean nothing can compare to the delicious meal I had on Thursday evening. And nothing screams “Life in Bush Alaska” like the story that goes with it.

I have a new favorite Papa Murphy’s Take & Bake Pizza. Their Steak and Garlic pizza is to die for and I discovered that in Kivalina, Alaska. (Home of the $16 dollar Tombstone.)

You heard correctly. I had a Papa Murphy’s pizza delivered by plane to my house, a hundred some miles above the Arctic Circle. Emma has lived and taught here for five years but just learned from a friend a few weeks ago about some smashing deals that the Anchorage Papa Murphy’s does with the villages in the farthest outreaches of Alaska. For their regular menu price the will make and send you out a pizza or ten pizzas for $36 dollars. So for every 10 pizzas you order, it’s another $36 bones. If you wanna sell pizzas at a ball game for a school fundraiser, go for it. If you wanna go in with a few others and split the cost of shipping, go for it.

For less than a Tombstone from the Native Store that is just 15 yards from my front step, I can get a FRESH Steak & Garlic Papa Murphy’s Pizza from Anchorage, Alaska. If I would have known this in August or September I’m not sure I would have been able to shed as much weight as I have to this point.

But from here on out…we may periodically treat ourselves to a pizza pie from the real world.

On a similar note:

I will be adding PTARMIGAN to my list of sampled Alaskan Native food after we cook these bad boys up for supper this week.

3 shots and 4 birds on a Sunday afternoon make for a Happy Camper.

We've just caught up on a couple months of blogs. We've been away from the computer for a bit, but are home now, and are actually glad to be back. Mr. Tveit took good care of our house and kept us informed of the local news. Kirby, I like ,others, laugh and cry when I read your blogs. I really hope you take some time to put this experience into a book - not necessarily for the masses, but for your family to relive this time with you. I always said that the class of '93 was special, and you certainly are an example of the "specialness" - is that a word? - that senior class exhibited. Thanks for sharing your life with us. Mrs. H.
